argentina passes gay marriage bill/one love ante la ley!

On the 40th anniversary of the stonewall riots a year ago, I did this story on Argentine acting/writing/directing couple Lorena Romanin and Sofia Wilhelmi for the "Freedom" issue of d-modemag.

The most memorable part of the interview for me was their statement that: "Everyone tells us to be patient, because sooner or later gay marriage rights will become a reality. But we're tired of waiting: we're in love, we want to take our vows and form a legally protected family NOW."

Today, by a 33-27 vote, Argentina became the first Latin American country to legalize gay marriage.

It's hard to explain how proud I am of my activist friends who've been on the front lines of this struggle for so long in a country like theirs, where poverty is rampant, abortion is criminalized, and the Catholic church is such a powerful, reactionary presence: a huge step forward for humankind.... RESPECT!

En la entrevista ellas afirmaron: "Todos nos dicen que debemos pacientar - que en algún momento, quizás en otra generación, vamos a conseguir nuestros derechos. Pero estamos hartas de esperar: nos amamos, queremos casarnos y formar una familia amparada por la ley YA."

Hoy, por un votación de 33 a 27, la Argentina se convirtió en el primer país latinoamericano en aprobar el matrimonio gay.

Cuanta emoción!! y RESPECT a todxs lxs que dieron años de lucha para que se cumpla este gran paso en adelante para la libertad y la igualdad: que la una sin la otra no puede existir.
